HK Heritage Museum and Nan Lian Garden

Summary

  • The Hong Kong temple is colorful, which is probably common among tropical regions, and has luxurious decorations supported by the wealth of Hong Kong.
  • The HK Heritage Museum focuses on talented individuals from Hong Kong, where we can learn about impressive movies, songs, and artworks.

Highlights

Sik Sik Yuen Wong Tai Sin Temple

  • It has eye-catching huge signage in bright red color. This colorful temporary signage is probably unique to Hong Kong.
  • The architectural style of the temple is somewhat in between mainland and Okinawa temple styles.
  • There is even a free museum about the culture and architecture of this temple.
  • Many temples are in this area, but each of them is well maintained, has vivid colors, and often features gold paintings.

Nan Lian Garden

  • This garden is close to the last temple and features beautiful landscaping with more relaxing buildings.
  • There is a store for artistic stones and souvenirs.

Architecture Exhibition

- This is a free museum in the garden, showcasing miniature models of buildings and detailed explanations about the woodwork used in that architecture. Woodwork exhibitions are rarely seen, and it was satisfying to see an impressive collection from various dynasties.

Pottery Exhibition

  • We can find unique pottery made using special crafting methods. I like the patterns that appear naturally based on the conditions of the oven and the layers of grass. They’re probably not artificially made but appear in perfect condition. Not only the colors, but the surfaces of each piece are different and display interesting reflections when illuminated by a flashlight.

Chi Lin Nunnery

  • Directly connected to Nan Lian Garden. I couldn’t take pictures in most places, but the scale of the temple was magnificent.

Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery

  • Climbing up the mountain can be painstaking, but there are thousands of golden Buddhas along the way.
  • There is a giant pagoda and some temples at the end of the pathway.

Hong Kong Heritage Museum

  • Located in a somewhat inconvenient area, but worth visiting.
  • We can deepen our understanding of famous individuals such as Jackie Chan, and the strong focus on individuals and culture rather than on artwork is unique.

Chinese Opera Exhibition

  • The exhibition about Chinese Opera includes unique signage and costumes from the performances.

Sculpture Exhibitions

  • The artistic style is dynamic and familiar, often seen in games about the Three Kingdoms.
  • The sculptures are realistic, but their intensification of power makes them feel like fantasy.
  • They resonate well with Chinese characters and are transient, embodying strength at the same time.
  • I could also see some paintings used in the making of the sculptures.

The Mills

  • The mills were an art space where an old factory used to be. It beautifully shows some wear and tear but is still a really clean place. Like other places, it’s open until night, but some exhibitions close early.
  • There are many artworks on the walls and multiple restaurants, not just galleries.

Foods

  • This drink looks like tea but is a dense herbal medicine.
  • The second dish is from Fairwood, which is a large Hong Kong food franchise. We can try many traditional foods at a cheap price.
  • The almond tofu here is not sweetened like the Japanese version.

Opinions

  • I like the vivid colors used in Hong Kong art. Tropical areas tend to use thick colors; I wonder if the climate even affects artistic style.
  • The shadows created by woodwork are so beautiful, but they’re rarely seen in modern architecture.
  • Pop culture is hardly featured in museums, but I think many people are expecting to see it. I hope museums will showcase many more contemporary and popular works in the future.
  • The artwork capturing a brief moment of dynamic movement is beautiful, and The Great Wave off Kanagawa is one of them. Understanding dynamic natural phenomena is also beneficial when we create game effects.
  • Old buildings are often torn down, but renovating them while partially preserving their structure seems to be a good idea.
